These 78 armed conflicts in Jefferson County are taken from the April, 1960 volume of “West Virginia History,” by Allen W. Jones, a professor of history at the University of Alabama-Montgomery on “The Military Events in West Virginia During the Civil War, 1861-1865.” The total of armed conflicts is greater, in part, because of the lack of record-keeping particularly by locally-originated Confederate Cavalry units, the actions of which are ascertained from written histories of their members.
