HENDERSON, JOHN: Joined Cav. Co. at Charles Town on 6/26/61 and then became Capt. of that Co. This Co. later known as Glenn’s Co. of 7th Va. Cav. and Co. A of 12th Va. Cav. Henderson shot through the right shoulder in camp at Duffields on Sept. 8, 1861 by Pvt. James A. Miller of his Co. This altercation occurred after Henderson ordered that one of Miller’s friends be arrested.  Miller was court-martialed for mutiny, insubordination, and attempted murder. He was found guilty of all charges and executed by firing squad in the spring of 1862. Henderson resumed duty “on partial recovery” on 1/11/61. KERFOOT, GEORGE W.: Listed in Glenn’s Co. of 7th Va. Cav. (formerly Henderson’s Co. and later Co. A of 12th Va. Cav.); date and location of enl. not stated.  Court martialed 10/23/61 for “Mutiny, with encouraging instigating or aiding and abetting an attempt to take the life of” Capt. Henderson. On Sept. 8,1861, Pvt. James W. Miller of Henderson’s Co. intentionally shot Henderson through the right shoulder because Henderson had ordered the arrest of one of Miller’s friends. According to the court martial record, Kerfoot was “giving countenance to and encouraging Miller in the perpetration of the outrage and shooting.” Kerfoot reportedly stated that if Miller hadn’t shot Henderson, he would have.  Kerfoot sentenced to 100 days hard labor with ball and chain. Miller executed by firing squad.

MILLER, JAMES H. (or A): Listed in Glenn’s Co. of 7th Va. Cav. (later Co. A of 12th Cav.); date of enl. and location not stated.  Court martialed 10/23/61 for attempting to murder John Henderson, Capt. of Miller’s Company. Miller shot Henderson in the right shoulder with a Sharp’s carbine on Sept. 6, 1861 at the Co. camp near Duffields. This altercation occurred because Henderson had ordered the arrest of Oldham Herald (a Pvt. in Henderson’s Co. and apparently a friend of Miller’s) on Sept. 7. The Court sentenced Miller to death by firing squad.  Execution occurred in the spring of 1862.

ROUSS, CHARLES BROADWAY: b. 2/11/36 near Woodsboro, Md.  His father purchased “Shannon Hill,” a farm near Charles Town, in 1853. Established business in Winchester in 1854, and in six years, Rouss had accumulated a personal fortune worth sixty thousand dollars and he was the leading merchant in Winchester. When the Stonewall Brigade returned to the Valley in the late fall of 1861, Rouss “surfeited them with cigars and plugs of tobacco as they marched by his store before Winchester’s cheering residents.” Early in 1862, Rouss moved his business to Richmond, where he ran a store on Main Street, between 12th & 13th Streets, and another on East Broad Street. Rouss also engaged in blockade running in the Richmond area. enl. at Camp Lee, Richmond, 1/30/64, and was assigned to Co. B, 12th Va. Cav. as Pvt. Joined Co. B at Waynesboro, 2/15/64. Present March/April 1864. Paid 9/28/64 for service, 3/13-8/31/64. Admitted Chimborazo #4 9/23/64; “fever int.” Trans. to Robertson’s Hosp., 9/29/64. Unofficial source (Baylor) shows him back in action as he participated in an attack against the 21st N.Y. Cav. on 12/6/64. No further record.  Postwar, “the war left the formerly prosperous merchant without a cent to his name and eleven thousand dollars in debt to New York firms.” Moved to “Shannon Hill” near Charles Town, where he remained until 3/20/66, when he moved to New York City. He became an extremely successful merchant in New York City, making millions of dollars. Also became a philanthropist. Donated thousands of dollars to Confederate veteran organizations and to projects in Jefferson Co., W.Va., and Frederick Co., Va. Miles, commander of the Harpers Ferry garrison, several days before Stonewall Jackson’s capture at Harpers Ferry on 9/15/62. Miles’s parole of Rouss led many to hypothesize that Miles was a traitor. WILSON, WILLIAM LYNE: b.  5/3/43 one mile northeast of Middleway, Jefferson Co. 5’7″. fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, weight 125 Ibs. Attended Charles Town Academy, and then entered Columbia College, Washington, D.C., (now George Washington University) where he graduated in 1860 with a BA; then attended the University of Virginia until the outset of the war. Joined the Confederate A.M. Dept. in the Shenandoah Valley, Aug. 1861. enl. 4/1/62 at Conrad’s Store in Co. B of 12th Va. Cav. as Pvt. Later promoted to Sgt. Major, roll for Sept. 1862 reports him absent sick since 9/20/62. POW just west of Halltown, Jefferson Co. 12/20/62 (Ft. McHenry, 12/22/62). To Ft. Monroe for exchange, 12/29/62. Present Nov./Dec. 1863. Absent with leave, Jan./Feb. 1864. Present March/April 1864. Slightly wded. In the leg at Todd’s Tavern, 5/5/64. Bay horse appraised at $1100 KIA  near Todd’s Tavern, 5/9/64. Paroled at Winchester, 4/19/65. Postwar, assistant professor at Columbia College, 1865-1871. Received law degree from Columbia College, 1867. Returned to Charles Town, W.Va., in 1871, and formed a law partnership with his cousin George Baylor. m. Nannie Huntington, daughter of the president of Columbia College in 1869. Elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention, 1880. Served as President of West Virginia University, 9/6/82-3/4/83. Served in U.S. Congress as the 2nd District Representative from W.Va. from 1883-1894. While in Congress, he was a member of the Committee on Appropriations; and later, as a strong supporter of tariff reform, he joined the Ways and Means Committee. Became chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1892 and informed Grover Cleveland of his selection as the Democratic candidate. Postmaster General of the U.S, from 1895-1897; while in this position, he pioneered the rural free delivery system. Served as president of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., 1897-1900. d.  10/17/1900 at Lexington. bur. Edge Hill Cem., Charles Town, W.Va.
